It’s with a heavy heart that I must announce the closure of JellyChip, as we approach our 4th birthday.
What you may not realise is that behind the scenes, for many months now, we’ve been desperately searching to raise more funds to keep going. We’ve tried venture capitalists, private investors, considered crowdfunding solutions and promoted our many in-app revenue streams.
Yet we’ve been unable to find a stable source of income, which has made things hard for the team, adversely affected our product, and brought our deadlines forward. This has led to design choices we never wanted to take (a limited Feed that resets with every gift, now you know our rationale), an unhappy people, and the lack of options to keep JellyChip running.
I just wanted to give you the biggest thanks for all your positivity and incredible giving over the past 4 years. We’ve raised over USD 4,000 for our charities over 4 years, which has made an impact greater than you can ever imagine.
We’ve planted trees, restored forests, cleaned the air, fed children, vaccinated dogs, vaccinated people, researched Alzheimer’s, taught classes, and powered schools, among many other advocacies and aid.
We’ve had ups and downs at JellyChip, some of our earliest Chippers will know that. We’ve changed our design three times, we’ve changed our logo three times (once to lime, then to red, then back to green), and we’ve removed Feed twice (you’ll know why).
Chippers have also bought more than 10,000 gifts for people in need, which is the greatest achievement of all.
Unfortunately our existing investors are no longer willing to invest in JellyChip. Their explanation is that we’ve not grown the way we would have liked over the past 4 years, which is entirely true. JellyChip once started as a website, a non-responsive website, which means it looked terrible on your phone. So we transitioned to our apps, then we refined our apps.
Then we added Snaps, and Chat, and Group Chat, and Lifeline and Leaderboards. And then we upgraded our servers for literally 2 years. And we just seemed to have missed the mark.
We’ve studied why, believe us, and its likely a range of factors that have led us where we are. I, myself, have had to constantly shut out the thought that “people might not want to do charity”, as I don’t think that is the case. I just think JellyChip became too complicated, with a lack of focus, and we never quite gave people the “giving buzz” that we expected. Our charities have never been able to prove their impact either, despite our giving and despite our constant requests. And this has been a huge downfall, and remains so to this day.
So we’re here at the end. And it’s extremely bittersweet.
That said, we won’t stop. It’s too early to talk about our next venture, but if I were to make a new “thing”, it would have to be clean, simple and decidedly specific. And it must be achieved with a good heart. Don’t worry, we won’t stop. Message me or Nissl privately if you would like more information on this but I expect we’ll be walking down new paths soon. And one that is free from our current constraints.
So here’s a big thank you from me. It’s been a 4 year experience. I’ve lost a lot of friends, lost a lot of sleep, lost a bit of dignity, and lived an unhealthy life. But we’ve learned a lot about everything, we’ve made our dent on the planet, and helped a lot of people. We can take this energy as fuel for whatever we end up doing next. Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one. And I would not have changed a thing.
The JellyChip app will leave the App Store and Google Play on June 6th, surveys will stop on June 14th and the JellyChip servers will be turned off on June 24th. We will keep paying our charities until that date.
From me and the team - it’s been a pleasure. Thank you.
With the announcement of Feed 2 we thought it would be appropriate to update our Feed Rules so you know what you can, and can't, talk about.
Feed 2 was announced a couple of days ago, and will adapt how Feed works and functions. Feed will now reset upon every complete (or failed) gift, which will create a more temporary space to chat and have fun. This will also create more of a dynamic opportunity to express yourself knowing that your messages could be deleted within seconds.
We're running some final tests now and hope to have the new Feed launched sometime on Friday (pending its approval by the App Store and Google Play).
You guys bought 1096 gifts in April to plant trees, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, save our animals and rainforest, and protect our oceans and their habitats.
Our monthly summary:
You buy them in the app, we pay for it in real life. Well done everyone!
Hope you're doing well. You may have noticed two new categories in the JellyChip Vote section in update 2.29 and we wanted to explain why.
Our two new gift categories are Community and Education. Now these two have no relevance to our environment focus over the past 6 months, which is curious because you might be wondering why they're now in the app.
As you will know, we switched to environmental charity gifts in November as a result of pressure to change our "business practices" and expedite our app reviews on the App Store and Google Play Store. We complied with this and it worked for a while. But we're no longer receiving the growth in user population that we feel is sustainable to keep the JellyChip platform going. And that sucks.
So we're going to start over the next couple of weeks to return many of our favourite gifts that were once-upon-a-time live on the JellyChip platform, over the past 4 years.
We've fixed a lot of the other issues that were recommended to us since November so we feel confident in bringing these advocacies back to the app. So you'll be able to expect many more gifts over the next couple of weeks. This will include school gifts, vaccines, other environmental impact, and many more giving opportunities that support some of the best charities around the world.
Now you'll have more choice than ever to chip in, make a difference, feel jelly and save our planet. There's a huge amount of need in the world and I hope we can make a difference together. Don't forget our age-old saying, "you buy it in the app and we'll pay for it in real life". :)
We've also included a new "watch ads" popup every 5 mins or so, whenever you're in Lifeline. We need ad revenue to keep JellyChip going so please take a moment out of your day to watch an ad or too. We'd be so thankful and this is really important to us.
Keep up the amazing work,
