St Joseph’s Secondary School in Bacolod is a Year 8 to Year 12 co-educational school for 1,600 poor and disadvantaged children. The majority of parents work as drivers, fisher folk, vegetable gardeners, government or are in casual work. Almost all students receive either a Government subsidy, and other form of scholarship such as tuition assistance and funds for text books. including 300 pesos ($8) per year for all text books per student. St Joseph’s also runs a night school for 300 children and young people who due to poverty are forced to work during school hours. This is a five year course. Teaching staff are volunteers. This gift pays for one student to attend an evening tuition class at St. Joseph's Secondary School so that they can continue to learn, grow, and move onto skilled jobs in the years to come.
