So let's talk about our initiative with Lasallian in the Philippines and how we're help this great nation to cope with poverty and other challenges.
One of the biggest foundations that JellyChip supports is The Lasallian Foundation, a partnership that started in June 2014. The Lasallian Foundation’s advocacy supports education and related programs for the empowerment of children, youth and their communities in the Asia Pacific region. One of their beneficiaries are schools from the Philippines - a field that La Salle, the schools which benefit most from Lasallian's aid, are experts in. JellyChip together with The Lasallian Foundation have been extending a hand to the children and youth of the Philippines via the JellyChip app. Listed below are the gifts which users can donate using their points:
Give a gift of One Day of Counseling through Bahay Pag Asa in Bacolod
Bahay Pag-Asa or House of Hope was established as a rehabilitation center for juvenile offenders. Philippine courts release them to the center rather than sending them to jail. The rehabilitation aims to send these boys back to school or learn vocational skills; also, they try to reintegrate the boys back to their families. JellyChip will be providing Bahay Pag-asa the means for each boy to receive one professional counselling session for a day.
Give the gifts of One School Book and One School Class through St. Joseph’s Secondary School and Night School in Bacolod
This is for school-age 8 to 12 year old public school students, around 1,600 them belonging to poor families. These are children of local fishermen, farmers, drivers, and other casual work. The majority of the students who go to school here are subsidized by the government or a scholarship. This is due to the fact that their parents cannot afford to help them attend school with the little income that they have. These scholarships only pay for their school fees, not their textbooks, or other learning material however - and this only partially covers the number of students at the secondary school. Students in this school who cannot afford to buy textbooks share their books or use hand-me-downs from their seniors. With the help of the JellyChip app, we can provide one child with a completely new textbook.
The same school offers night classes for 300 children who cannot make class during regular school hours. These children work during the day to help their families. Their meager salaries are used to pay for the food on their tables at home or possibly send a younger sibling to school; hardly enough to put them through schools. JellyChip will be lending these children a hand with their tuition fees, each gift providing one evening of tuition for one student.
Give the gifts of One School Ride, One Pencil and One Day of school through Jaime Hilario Integrated School in Bagac
This school was established to help children coming from poor families who have no access to primary education. Their tuition is free, however, they still have other educational expenses such as transportation, stationery, school materials, and equipment that may be more that what their parents can afford. Parents of these children are fishermen, farmers, or owners small sari-sari store. Their income is not enough to sustain their kids’ schooling as a majority of the students have more than 4 siblings. To help the children continue their studies, JellyChip will be assisting them by paying bus fares, pencils and schooling.
Give the gift of One Day of Preschool through St. La Salle Preschool in Manila
This preparatory school was built to educate poor pre-school children who live in the slum area surrounding De La Salle University in Taft Ave., Manila. These are children of labourers, taxi or jeepney drivers, or unemployed parents who cannot afford sending their young ones to school. St. La Salle Preschool has only two classes, a class for 4 year olds and a class for 5 year olds. There are only three teaching staff, including the Principal. JellyChip will extend a hand in paying for one day of school fees for a child.
